Managing transitions : Leadership Hiring

Private equity firms have traditionally preferred candidates with prior PE portfolio company experience — but talent scarcity and increasingly complex value-creation strategies are pushing them to recruit directly from the corporate world. The challenge: not every accomplished corporate executive is built for the PE environment.
PE-backed roles demand immediate value creation, lean execution, and direct, high-candor engagement with investors and boards. The pace is faster, the accountability sharper, and the decision cycles far tighter than in most large corporate settings. Past success in a blue-chip organisation is not, by itself, a reliable predictor of success here.
Five capabilities that distinguish executives who thrive in PE-backed roles:
- Practical commercial orientation — a genuine results-first mindset, not just strategic thinking
- Strategic agility under pressure — the ability to develop and execute strategy rapidly, often with incomplete information
- Broad influence networks — driving impact across a complex stakeholder landscape without deep institutional infrastructure
- Risk appetite on talent decisions — willingness to make bold, fast calls on people
- Interpersonal versatility — the ability to engage authentically across very different contexts, from the shop floor to the board room
The article’s core message for talent leaders and PE investors: rigorous assessment must go beyond credentials and past titles. What matters is whether a candidate has the specific motivation and psychological readiness for a fundamentally different operating model — not just whether they’ve been successful elsewhere.
